Over the last few years I have written several articles about the area of Supply Chain Management. I have discussed the visibility and real-time collaboration that is now available to companies allowing them to build very integrated supply chains. As this area is continuing to evolve, I have begun to focus on another piece of the “integrated marketplace’, which is Customer Relationship Management (CRM). Companies are creating integrated supply chains that are driven by the needs of the market and, subsequently, are moving the supply chain closer to the customer. So what is the next evolution? It is becoming clear that the integrated supply chain alone is not enough. To succeed with this model, businesses have to incorporate the important concepts in the field of CRM.

Providing Supply Chain Vision…Not Just Visibility

Recently manufacturers have spent a significant amount of time and resources on gaining “visibility” into their supply and distribution chains. A strong case can be made that having this visibility translates into real value in terms of increasing supply-chain efficiencies, on a day-to-day level. While this capability is valuable, there are much larger issues that need to be addressed in order to achieve a real return on investment.
